Why Your Quad Won’t Start After Sitting

Why Your Quad Won’t Start After Sitting

You finally have a free weekend, head to the garage, turn the key, and…nothing.

If your quad has been sitting for a few weeks or a few months, this is a common problem. The good news is that it isn’t always a major repair. In many cases, a simple fix can get you back on the trail.

At Old School Moto, we’ve seen it all. Here are the most common reasons a machine won’t start after sitting and what you should check first.

1. The Battery Is Dead or Weak

The battery is the first place to look.

Even a healthy battery can lose its charge if the machine hasn’t been started for a while.

Signs of a weak battery include:

  • Clicking when you turn the key
  • Slow engine cranking
  • Dim headlights
  • No electrical power at all

Sometimes the battery only needs a charge. Other times, it’s time for a replacement.

2. Old Fuel Is Causing Problems

Fuel doesn’t stay fresh forever.

If gasoline sits too long, it begins to break down. This can clog the fuel system and make starting difficult, especially on carbureted machines.

Old fuel may cause:

  • Hard starting
  • Rough idle
  • Poor throttle response
  • Engine stalling

Replacing old fuel and cleaning the fuel system often solves the problem.

3. The Carburetor Is Gummed Up

Many older quads use carburetors instead of fuel injection.

When fuel sits inside the carburetor, it can leave behind sticky deposits that block small passages and jets.

A carburetor cleaning is often needed before the engine will run properly again.

4. Dirty Air Filter

A clogged air filter limits airflow to the engine.

If the filter is packed with dirt, mud, or debris, your quad may struggle to start or run poorly.

Cleaning or replacing the air filter is a quick service that can improve performance.

5. Spark Plug Problems

A worn or fouled spark plug can keep the engine from firing.

Check for:

  • Heavy carbon buildup
  • Oil on the plug
  • Damaged electrodes
  • Incorrect gap

Replacing a spark plug is inexpensive and often worth doing if it has been in the machine for a long time.

6. Rodents or Damaged Wiring

Machines that sit in sheds or barns sometimes attract mice.

Rodents can chew wiring, build nests around the engine, or damage electrical connectors.

A quick inspection may reveal the problem before it becomes a larger repair.

7. Safety Switch Issues

Many ATVs and UTVs have safety switches that prevent starting unless certain conditions are met.

A faulty brake switch, neutral switch, or ignition switch can make it seem like the machine has a bigger problem than it actually does.

Don’t Keep Cranking It

If your quad won’t start after several attempts, avoid repeatedly cranking the engine.

Doing so can drain the battery, flood the engine, or create additional problems that make diagnosis more difficult.

Finding the cause first usually saves time and money.
